The interior design project for ONE Cotroceni Apartment reflects TIUGA STUDIO's expertise in crafting spaces that prioritize both aesthetics and functionality, with a particular focus on accessibility for a client in a wheelchair. This thoughtful design not only aligns with contemporary architectural trends but also addresses the specific needs of individuals with disabilities, demonstrating how crucial inclusive design is for creating livable and beautiful environments.
Accessibility was the driving principle behind every design choice in this apartment. The layout is open and fluid, ensuring seamless mobility throughout the space. Wide doorways, unobstructed pathways, and level flooring are essential elements in the design, allowing the client to navigate the apartment without barriers. TIUGA STUDIO ensured that furniture placement maximizes open space, providing ample room for turning and maneuvering. The integration of natural materials, such as light wood flooring and neutral-toned walls, adds warmth and elegance, while also providing a smooth surface that facilitates easy wheelchair movement.
The kitchen is a key example of inclusive design in action. Counters and cabinetry have been designed at a lower height for easy reach, while pull-out drawers and open shelving replace traditional cabinets, ensuring that all kitchen essentials are easily accessible. The sink and stove are left open underneath to allow for a wheelchair to be rolled in comfortably. Additionally, the kitchen features smart appliances with touch control interfaces and voice command options, enhancing the client's independence.
In the living area, TIUGA STUDIO has incorporated furnishings that balance style and function. Low-profile, modular seating allows for ease of transfer from the wheelchair to the couch, while sturdy side tables and coffee tables ensure stability. The visual palette of soft earth tones, punctuated with bold accents, creates a calm yet vibrant atmosphere. An artistic mural with a nature-inspired theme adorns one wall, bringing depth and serenity to the room. Additionally, adaptive lighting with touch-sensitive or remote-controlled options ensures ease of use, even for someone with limited mobility.
The bedroom design also highlights TIUGA STUDIO's commitment to accessibility. A lowered bed with reinforced supports allows the client to transfer with ease. The wardrobe doors slide rather than swing open, reducing the effort needed to access clothing. Accessible lighting, including bedside controls, allows the client to adjust the lighting without having to leave the bed. The room is visually tied together with deep blue tones and mustard yellow accents, creating a relaxing yet energizing environment.
The bathroom exemplifies the studio's dedication to safety and comfort. The shower is barrier-free, with a built-in bench and grab bars that allow for both safety and convenience. Fixtures are chosen with accessibility in mind, such as lever-handled faucets and a hand-held showerhead for ease of use. The overall design is sleek and modern, utilizing marble textures and minimalistic elements to create a spa-like experience, while still catering to the client's needs.
This project underscores the importance of inclusive interior design, particularly for people with disabilities. By blending style with functionality, TIUGA STUDIO has created a space that enhances the client’s daily life, providing them with independence, safety, and comfort. Accessible design does not have to sacrifice beauty—TIUGA STUDIO proves that a well-thought-out, inclusive space can be both stunning and supportive.
In the context of this apartment, the design ensures that every element, from the layout to the smallest fixtures, is tailored to meet the client's unique needs while still embracing the principles of modern, elegant design. This is a testament to the power of interior design in improving quality of life, particularly for individuals living with disabilities.
